The other day was National Margarita day. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than with chips and easy guacamole! But the margs and tortilla chips always leave my mouth puckering due to the saltiness. I discussed sodium and recommendations from the American Heart Association for a heart healthy diet in my Heart Healthy Trail Mix post, if you are watching your sodium intake.

It was very fitting this post on healthy baked tortilla chips was this week because I did a presentation on the heart healthy diet to a local business. Cardiovascular disease is the most popular disease in the United States. As Americans, we consume too much processed food, salt and saturated fat in our diet. I teach nutrition through the FitKids 360 program and we emphasize 6 home cooked meals a week. Not only is it better for your health, but also for your wallet.

I made these easy spicy tacos last week and had leftover corn tortillas that I wanted to use up. They would also be great with these sheet pan chicken fajitas. I’ve been making these healthy tortilla chip alternatives for years. They are SO easy and well worth the time for the health benefits. Not to mention how quick and easy this guacamole recipe is!

How Do I Make a Healthy Tortilla Chips?

These healthy baked tortilla chips can come together in under 15 minutes. You will need a sheet pan, cooking spray and an oven. Place the corn tortillas in a stack and cut them into 8 pieces (like you are cutting a pizza). Be sure to spray the sheet pan before putting the corn tortilla pieces on it. One they are laid down flat, not touching one another, spray again.

See? So easy, that is pretty much all you need. You can salt them before going in the oven, but do so sparingly! The nutrition panel below is depicted for ½ tsp of salt. (FYI ¼ tsp of salt is about 700mg!)

Try these baked tortilla chips as a healthy tortilla chip alternative. You save almost half the salt and fat compared to the store bought kind. These healthy baked tortilla chips with an easy guacamole recipe are a one stop shop for the essentials you need at your next party.

Ingredients

Healthy Baked Tortilla Chips Recipe

8 corn tortillas

Cooking spray

½ tsp salt

Easy Guacamole Recipe

2 avocados

1 lime, juiced

¼ cup red onion, diced

1 serrano pepper, diced (optional)

¼ cup cilantro leaves, chopped

S & P to taste

Instructions

  1. Spray a sheet pan with cooking spray and preheat the oven to 425F.
  2. On a cutting board, cut tortillas into 8 pieces like a pizza.
  3. Lay the tortillas on the sheet pan in a single layer. Do not let the pieces touch each other.
  4. Spray the tortillas with cooking spray and lightly salt before putting them into the oven.
  5. Cook for 8 minutes or until the tortillas crisp up. Every oven is different, check at 7 minutes and see if they need more time.
  6. Place on a wire drying rack after they are done cooking.
  7. While the tortilla chips are cooking, combine all ingredients for the guacamole in a bowl or large plate and press with a fork to mash.

Notes

A darker sheet pan will cook faster than a lighter one, adjust the cooking time as needed.

If you want to add lime juice, add it after you pull them out of the oven.

The wire drying rack does help make these chips extra crispy.

Depending on your oven, some will cook the chips towards the back of the baking sheet faster. If needed rotate the baking sheet halfway through.
